February Is The Cruelest Month…

In It Bugs Me, Just Because... on February 14, 2012 at 3:52 pm

That’s actually not the way the poem goes, but I paraphrase for effect.

We’ve been through the holiday season, Christmas/Hanukkah/Solstice/Yule/whatever, the flicker of bright promise at the turn of another calendar year, the crashing and burning of most (if not all) of your New Year’s resolutions, the shock of the bills for what you bought for Christmas/Hanukkah/et cetera, and the realization that you’re one day closer to the inevitable end.

Bummer, isn’t it?

You also realize, since this is the year that gives February, bastion of cold, snow, gray skies, short days, ice, injuries, traffic accidents, and general misery, another whole day to bedevil us, that life ain’t fair.

(Sidebar: It never was, and probably never will be.  As far as I can tell, the concept of “fair” has never been anything like a part of life.)

So what can you do?

Weep, wail, moan, and and rail at God, whoever you perceive him/her/it/them to be?

Get seriously drunk/stoned/unconscious, and stay that way the rest of your life?

Get angry, buy an assault rifle and a crate or two of ammunition, and go on a rampage?

Curl up in a fetal position on your bed in a dark room, and never come out again?

Well, none of those alternatives are useful, productive, or advisable.

Here’s a suggestion:

What would you do for the rest of your life for free, if you could?

Start doing it.

When you do what you love, and love what you do, you can work wonders… I’ve seen it.

(Not that I’ve done it yet, but I’ve seen it.)

So, go.  See. Do.  Enjoy.

You owe it to yourself.

And the world owes you… nothing.

(It never has.)

Anything worthwhile anyone has ever achieved is because they worked for it, not because it was “owed” to them.

Got it?  Good.
