Spinning Gold Out Of Excrement…

In It Bugs Me, Just Because... on February 8, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Well, yesterday being the Stupor Bowl, I (and my household) didn’t watch.  The last time I cared about professional football, Dick Butkus played linebacker for Da Bears.

That is merely preamble to this occurrence, which cheesed me off when I heard about it.  Pete Hoekstra, a Republican who is running for the U. S. Senate against incumbent Debbie Stabenow, paid for a campaign commercial during the game.  The semiotics of the commercial, a rice paddy, with a young Asian woman thanking Stabenow, whom she called Debbie “Spend It Now”, for helping to weaken the economy of the U. S. by authorizing continued borrowing from China, and doing so in what can be politely called pidgin English, spelled out one thing to me, who has studied the semiotics of film for many years… this was a blatant appeal to xenophobia and racism, which is not surprising, for me, for a Republican.  They just don’t seem to get it.

<Resumed on Wednesday 8 Feb>

Unfortunately, this is not new.  George Bush had the “Willie Horton” ads, which targeted primal white fears of the “uppity black criminal”; Ronald Reagan had the “welfare queen” stereotype he used against Mondale (or was it Carter?); and the Republican campaigns I’ve studied for the last few election cycles have been about who can go farthest toward being a troglodyte the fastest.

Reagan’s “It’s Morning in America” appeal showed mostly white, small town, rural types – the archetypal Republican base {as opposed to the actual Republican base, of rich, white, snobbish, cliquish, and greedy types who want to perpetuate the status quo forever}.

The sad thing is, it’s not just Republicans.  Democrats perpetuate their straw men that they go after, also… and neither party seems to get it that what most of the electorate wants is for them to shut the f*** up and do the job that we elected them to do – fix the f***ing country.  Personally, I don’t give a rotund rodent’s rectum what our Congresscritters do on their off time (as long as it’s not illegal or immoral); I just want value for my money I shell out to pay these losers.

That’s right, I said losers… most of these guys were so incapable of doing anything else that we elected them to public office, where our expectations are low.  (They shouldn’t be, but they are.)

America’s getting wise to you, losers… time to s**t or get off the pot.
