Odds and Sods Around 9/11

In Think About It on September 9, 2011 at 10:59 pm

As we approach the tenth anniversary of the Al-Queda attacks on New York and Washington, and a “credible threat” report has been received and is being acted on, we need to suck it up and focus on what’s important.

Who’s the fugghead responsible for knocking out power to the San Diego area?

No, that’s not the important thing.

I am pleased at the speech President Obama gave Thursday before a joint session of Congress.  It seems he was able to skewer the Republicans, the Tea Party nutjobs, and even the Democrats who shirk their duties and responsibilities to the country that elected them to represent us (the citizenry) in Washington.

I feel he was eloquent without being too wordy, simple and clear, and even direct when he needed to be.  This is not the expected behavior from a sitting President approaching an election year.

“You need to pass this bill.”  The oft-repeated refrain drove home what he wanted to say.

And the finance lesson to a seemingly math-challenged crowd – “We can’t afford both.”  All too true.

Now we need to see what “The Opposite Of Progress” does…

As for the successors to the deceased bin Laden, trying to flex what muscles they think they have and hit the U.S. again, I have this to say.

If you’re really in a hurry to meet Allah, we can oblige you.  No extra charge for expedited service.

One of these days, Deity willing, I may visit what is now known as Ground Zero.  I expect it would have the same effect on me as my visit to The Wall years ago, when my Beautiful Wife and I were in Washington.

The memorial I would more like to visit would be in Shanksville, Pennsylvania – the crash site of United Flight 93.  Resolute civilians sacrificed their lives to keep their integrity and honor burnished brightly, preventing that plane from hitting another target in Washington.  They may have gone for the Capitol, or for the White House, or another symbolic target, but the passengers prevented that outcome, and their battle cry still rings down the halls of history, alongside others which resonate with our spirits.

“I have not yet begun to fight.”

“Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.”

“With your shield, or on it.”

“Don’t give up the ship.”

“Let’s roll.”

It’s something to keep in mind.
