It’s Dreaming Time Again…

In Think About It on August 16, 2011 at 6:22 pm

This coming weekend is the third weekend of August, and here in the Detroit area, it’s time for the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Back in the day, teens and cars cruised up and down Woodward Avenue from Detroit to Pontiac and back. They stopped at restaurants like Ted’s, the Maverick, the Big Boy, the Totem Pole, the Suzie Q… listening to radio stations like CKLW (“The Big 8!”), WKNR (“Keener 13”), and WXYZ (home of Jack the Bellboy).

Since the mid-1990’s, the cities along Woodward, along with the historical society formed to preserve the memories, have been sponsoring a multi-city party each year, calling it The Woodward Dream Cruise.  Classics, customs, hot rods and hoopties gravitate to the Avenue and show off.  Teens and early twenties then are in their sixties and seventies now.  They’ve restored rods that they could only drool over then… chromed, decked, shined, flamed, bored, stroked, chopped, channeled, bullnosed, leaded, frenched, candy-coated, metal-flaked, and customized all sorts of different ways.

What started as a one-day party has stretched into an informal week-long celebration of America at work; People come from all over the country – and even, the world – to show off and drive their cars.

It’s also one of the biggest photo and video operation  It’s been one of the biggest photo and video opportunities for the rest of us…

Shooting a parade of classic cars is a chance given people which doesn’t come along too often… I’ve been there this year, shooting B-roll video for a documentary on the Cruise’s history, the linkages to radio stations, drive-in restaurants  and drive-in theaters.  There’ll be more as the week progresses.

It’ll be something to see, I’d say.
